The entrance of the Union Gap Costo faces east, and last night we could see the full moon rising as we wheeled the shopping cart toward our car. It was so lovely, I just wanted to reach up, put it in my pocket and take it home. I scribbled the start of this on a scrap of paper, sitting at the Costco gas station while Jim filled the tank.
Moon in My Pocket
Low on evening’s east horizon
a creamy orb hangs
in the hyacinth sky
ripe and full
teasing me to take a bite
a perfect sugar-crusted cookie
a luminous turtle egg
a newly minted silver dollar
a giant pearl nestled
in the hollow of night’s neck
swathed in its scarf
of diaphanous cloud
I reach up
surprised to find it
hard cool smooth
under my fingertips
and slide it into my pocket
I’ll eat it later.
